Cobhams Asuquo – More Than Pretty Cobhams Asuquo is out with another creative number tune which he dubbed “More Than Pretty”. in his word:- This song is a reminder that contrary to what we have been made to believe, there is more to a woman than her contours, proportions, and wifely potential. Dear woman, you are in no way the inferior sex, because the is no such thing. You are valuable by virtue of just being you. You should not only be seen but heard as well. Your worth is more than your gender, more than your looks, more than landing a man. Above all else, you are a person; a human being first and foremost, with a store of talent, hopes, and dreams, valid feelings and desires, and you deserve to be acknowledged and treated with respect on your own merit, not merely on the merit of the man standing beside you. You have the power, the right, to become whatever you want; and you deserve it. You shouldn’t have to cower because you are a woman. You are b...

George Martin In some ways it seems entirely fitting that the death of Beatles producer, George Martin wasn’t accompanied by a burst of dramatic orchestration, a piccolo trumpet solo or a tumultuous crescendo of instruments followed by a dramatic final chord played on three different pianos. That’s because a really good producer is one you barely know is there. They sit quietly in the background as unassuming and supportive as the gentle whir of the tape as it purrs along to the music. Or at least they did until it all went digital.   Like all the slickest licks, fills and chops, good producers buried their best work deep into the mix. And it is on account of this burial that the gift of eternal life gets bestowed on those raw, unfinished ideas. Unless of course you’re talking about records by the Spin Doctors, Sheila B and the Devotion or Dean Friedman. None of which benefited from production at all. They were all dead on arrival, ...

Peter Gabriel Aberdeen AECC Peter Gabriel Aberdeen AECC, 09.12.14 Pathfinder, popularizer and baldy Gabble-pioneer Peter Gabriel defies Scotland’s umpteenth weather-bomb for three-course run through the hits. The ‘So’ album played in it’s entirety from start to finish plus hits electric and quiet. Former Genesis front-man and fox-headed, chameleon flower-stamper Peter Gabriel put on a stunning show at the Exhibition Centre in Aberdeen on Monday night. In spite of initial appearances, it wasn’t a tough sell. The 3000 middle-aged fans who’d braved Scotland’s erratic  ‘weather-bomb’ remained in such an attentive state that even the fist-raising anthem, ‘Biko’ failed to lift bums off seats. Whether it was the intensity of the performance, the deeply analytical songs or osteoarthritis, hips didn’t wiggle, arms didn’t wave and no one screamed off-key.  We sat, we observed and words of eternal gratitude fell from our lips like prayers. Somehow,...

Sky At Night ~ I Am Kloot You can’t polish a turd. Whoever said that? Were they onto something or were they just talking shit? The reality was always something we knew all along: the turd was quite happy feeling shit. When you’ve been unceremoniously squeezed out of someone’s arse and suffered the ignominy of being chewed up, absorbed and subjected to the usual slings and arrows of the exhausting digestive process, you’re unlikely to respond positively to the demands of civil society, style or no style. Turds bear the scars of everything we’ve been through – the biological equivalent of tree rings or glacial ice-cores – so the last thing you want to do is cover it up or sweeten it in any way. Get rid of all that smelly albuminous matter and all that microbial degradation and what’s left? Pooh that isn’t brown, isn’t really pooh at all. So when we heard that the hugely talented Guy Garvey of Elbow had sweetened I Am Kloot’s signature brand of Northern misanthro...

Anna Calvi ~ Anna Calvi Anna Calvi ~ Anna Calvi  If the thrashing, heavy romance of the deliciously windswept ‘Desire’ is anything to go by, the tipping of critical winks in the direction of Patti Smith may be something of a misnomer, building as it does more upon the sweeping panorama and open heart surgery of Australian rock-act The Triffids and the pernicious murder balladry of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.  It’s a big sound made with big ideas performed on big instruments and accompanied by big drums and big voices – a wave of energy might describe it better. On ‘First Kiss’ a gentle and slightly disembodied tremolo guitar brushes against a signature Spector kick-beat before swelling into a rapturous, overwhelming chorus, but whereas the elegant yet slightly malnourished Last Shadow Puppets built their tumultuous empire with mighty orchestral arrangements and all manner of post-production editing, Calvi produces almost as tremendous a ...
